The School Library is central to implementing, enriching and supporting the spiritual, teaching and learning, and social programs of the Catholic School.
Its mission is:
- To provide a dynamic and friendly learning environment where the school community can interact, learn, research and develop a love of reading.
- To support and promote the total development of each student in the light of the Gospel Values and the traditions of the school charism, to become life- long learners.
Columba Catholic College comprises two Campuses each with their own individual library space. Our Libraries are staffed by Library Managers.
The Mount Carmel Campus Library supports and enhances the educational mission of the College. The Library resources support the teaching, learning and recreational needs of our College community and strives to provide students with books to experience the pleasure of reading.
The Library provides the secondary campus with:
- A collection of printed, audio-visual and on-line resources.
- Access to the Library Catalogue (Destiny Management System) and external electronic databases (Encyclopedia Britannica, eLibrary Australasia, Sora eBooks, ClickView Educational Videos).
- A library collection that is current, aligns with the Australian Curriculum and supports students’ reading and learning activities.
- A small bank of laptops which provide backup to the College’s BYOD program for students to access as daily loans when their devices are being repaired.
- Age appropriate fiction and non-fiction collection.
- Assistance to teachers with resourcing the curriculum.
- Student access to printers.
Library Hours
The Mount Carmel Campus Library is open daily from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The Library is open before school and during lunch breaks where the emphasis is to provide a safe, welcoming place for students to engage and relax or to focus on study. Students can print assessments and class work due to be submitted.
Borrowing
Students are welcome to borrow before and after school and during breaks. Loans are for a two-week period and students are welcome to renew any books should they need to keep them longer.
Textbook Hire
The College participates in the National Textbook Scheme which is aimed to reduce the cost for families by supplying required texts for students. Students are provided with all current textbooks relevant to the Australian Curriculum for their chosen subjects at the start of each school year. Digital textbooks are also accessible on the 'CampionMyConnect2' platform which is integrated into the timetable data for each student via individual subject selections. Access to Campion is via the Student Intranet.
Homework Club
Homework Club is held at the Mount Carmel Campus Library and is supervised by teaching staff who volunteer their time on Thursday afternoon, from 3:00-4:00pm, to assist students with classwork, homework, revision and assessment tasks.
Activities
The Library organises special occasions throughout the year such as Book Week activities.
